PAN or Permanent Account Number is issued by Income Tax Department (ITD) under supervision of CBDT. It serves as an important ID proof also. PAN is a 10 digit alpha-numeric identity issued by ITD which is unique for each person. PAN is used by ITD to track and manage all Income Tax assesses in India. Obtaining PAN is voluntary in India but for certain specified transactions, PAN has been made compulsory. Every business entity must apply for PAN within 30 days of its incorporation.

Opening Bank Account
For opening a bank account in India, PAN is an essential KYC document so having a PAN for starting a business is must.
Filing of ITR
For filing ITR, it is mandatory to quote PAN.
GST Registration
Before applying for GST registration, it is mandatory to apply for PAN as the GST registration number is PAN based in India.
For TDS and TCS transactions
If a person deducts TDS, it is compulsory to have the PAN of deductee otherwise TDS will be deducted at a higher rate of 20%. Further, the deductee will get credit of TDS so deducted only if he has a valid PAN.

Any Indian citizen, including a minor, can apply for allotment of Permanent Account Number by furnishing valid proof and documents. Foreign individual or entity can also apply for PAN allotment.
Section 160 of Income Tax Act provides that a non-resident, minor, lunatic, idiot and court of wards may be represented through a Representative Assessee. In such cases, application for PAN will be made by the Representative assessee.
A Person cannot hold more than one PAN card. If a person holds more than one PAN, a penalty of Rs. 10,000/- may be imposed upon him. So, if a person is holding more than 1 PAN, he must immediately surrender duplicate PAN.
Yes, any PAN Card holder may apply for changes in the particulars of his PAN such as name change owing to marriage or spelling mistake, change in father’s name, change in date of birth. Such application is made in Form-49A.
PAN application can be made online through NSDL website or UTIITSL website. Both these agencies have been authorized by Government of India for issuing PAN. The applicant shall fill and submit online application form along with payment of fees online. Then, the applicant is required to send supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL/UTIITSL. PAN will be processed on receipt of documents.
